Chemex - for 80 years without an analog in the world

Do you know what James Bond, the actress Mary Tyler Moore and Monica from the TV show "Friends" have in common? That all three use the cult method of brewing coffee - Chemex, which was created in 1941. A proof that time is irrelevant once something is created with thought and touch to detail. After all, good things never go out of style. That's why we chose the topic of our current blog article to be the coffee dripper - Chemex.

History
Eighty years ago, the eccentric chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbom invented the unique Chemex device, known and actively used to this day. During his career, he created over 300 patents, ranging from shakers for making cocktails to cars. Its mission was to make everyday objects more fascinating, functional, and enjoyable to use.
Schlumbom wanted to discover not only how to extract the perfect drink from the coffee beans but also to create a device that would be beautiful and remarkable. Thanks to his knowledge, he invented the amazing Chemex - an hourglass-shaped glass vessel decorated with a beautiful wooden collar and leather binding.
Chemex has been recognized and repeatedly awarded by both the scientific community and the community of art and design. Today, this device is exhibited in many museums around the world.
Filter coffee is nothing new. In 1908, the German Melita Benz invented a funnel-shaped coffee strainer. Then, instead of a textile filter, she uses a piece of paper from her son's notebook.
How to use it:
The brewing method "Chemex" was invented by the chemist with a single purpose - to extract a perfect and healthy drink, as well as a delicious cup of coffee. And here are some steps that will help you if you are using this appliance for the first time.
Step 1:
Open the paper filter and shape it into a cone. One side should have three layers. Place it on the side of the spout.
Step 2:
Carefully pour 200 ml of hot water into the paper filter, avoiding air bubbles between the filter and the appliance. Rinsing the filter is done to prevent the taste of paper. Then pour out the water.
Step 3:
Place one full tablespoon of medium to coarse-ground and freshly roasted coffee in the filter for each 150 ml cup. You may calculate how many cups you will brew coffee, and therefore, how many tablespoons to put. For a more precise extraction, we recommend that you calculate the doses of coffee and water according to the SCA standards ratio, namely 55-60 g /1 l.
Step 4:
After the water boils to 92 - 96 ° C, remove it from the stove. The temperature at this point will be ideal for making coffee. Pour a little water on the ground coffee to moisten and start the so-called "Blooming" process. Wait around 20-30 seconds. Then add a little more water, re-irrigating the ground coffee all the time and keeping the water level slightly below the top of the appliance. The pouring water method is a matter of choice: constantly or in stages, fast, slow, with a rotating movement, etc. Once you reach the desired amount of water in the filter, let it pass through it, and the final drink reaches the bottom of the Chemex. Throw out the filter. Stir the liquid and serve in cups. It is also very significant to enjoy the drink.
We advise you to buy medium or slightly coarse ground and freshly roasted coffee, as anything else can affect the filtration rate, and the desired result will not be obtained. We also recommend using spring or purified water for this method.
If this article prompted you to buy Chemex, you might find it in our online store in the accessories section. We promise you a great experience of the senses with this method of extraction and taste that you will remember for a long time.
